A behavioral condition marked by distressing thoughts/ emotions about eating patterns and habits. An urge to eat less or more that spirals out of control, often occurring with other mental health issues (i.e. depression, anxiety disorder, substance abuse). 

Types of eating disorders can include:

  • Anorexia nervosa
  • Bulimia nervosa
  • Binge-eating disorder
  • Avoidant / restrictive food intake disorder
  • Pica
  • Rumination disorder

  • History of being teased/ ridiculed regarding size / weight
  • Social / cultural factors regarding the “perfect body
  • History of abuse

  • Dietary restriction
  • Frequent weight fluctuation
  • Significantly underweight
  • Negative body image
  • Binge eating or excessive exercise
  • Purging or use of laxative / diuretics
  • Excessive thoughts regarding weight, body image, food
  • Dental issues
  • Fainting spells
  • Weakened bones
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Cardiovascular or musculoskeletal issues

Treatment - The way to healing

  • Combination of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications (including antidepressants)
  • Family-based treatment (FBT)
  • Nutritional guidance
  • Medical in-patient programs
