Self-harming is the act of deliberately inflicting pain / damage to one's own body. 

Types of self-harm can include:

  • Cutting, scratching, burning or carving skin
  • Self-hitting, punching, head banging
  • Piercing skin or inserting objects under it

Triggers - The Causes

  • Having friends who self-harm
  • Mental health issues
  • Substance abuse

Symptoms - What it looks like

  • Scars (usually in patterns)
  • Cuts, scratches, bruises, bite marks
  • Keeping sharp objects nearby
  • Issues in interpersonal relationships
  • Frequent reporting of “accidental” injury
  • Unusual wearing of long sleeves / long pants (i.e. during hot weather, too
  • Behavioral / emotional instability, impulsivity or unpredictability
  • Excessive rubbing of an area on skin to create a burn
  • Statements of worthlessness, hopelessness or helplessness

  • Psychotherapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy
  • Mindfulness-based therapy
