Improve Your Mood and Feel Good

We all have those days when everything feels like a struggle. Some days, it feels like the weight of the world is bearing down on your shoulders and no matter what you do, you just can't seem to shake the feeling you are stuck in a funk. Thankfully, there are a few simple things you can do to give yourself an instant mood boost.

1. Soak in Some Vitamin D

Studies indicate Vitamin D helps reduce negative emotions and improves the quality of life. When you don't get enough sunlight, it can lead to feelings of sadness and fatigue. So next time you are feeling low, step outside for a breath of fresh air and let the sunshine wash over you. Even just a few minutes of daylight can help improve your mood.

2. Connect With Loved Ones

Everybody needs a shoulder to cry on or someone to lend a listening ear. Connecting with your loved ones can help reduce stress levels and make you feel more supported, loved and appreciated. Whether you stay in touch via text, social media or in person, quality time with loved ones is sure to give you a mood boost according to research.

3. Random Acts of Kindness

One of the best ways to feel good is to make someone else feel good. Whether you pay for someone's coffee, hold the door open for a stranger or simply offer a compliment, acts of kindness are sure to put a smile on your face.

4. Curl up With a Good Book

If you are looking for an escape, there's nothing quite like getting lost in a great book. Whether you are into novels, mysteries or nonfiction works, reading can transport you to another world and help take your mind off of whatever is stressing you out.

5. Treat Yourself

Don't forget to show yourself some love too! Buy yourself a new outfit, indulge in your favorite comfort food or take yourself on a mini vacation. Doing something special for yourself is always warranted—and is sure to lift your spirits! You don't have to necessarily spend money either. Take a bubble bath, give yourself a mani-pedi at home, rewatch your favorite movie or just take some time to relax and recharge.

6. Get Moving

It's no secret exercise releases feel-good chemicals like endorphins and serotonin. So, if you are looking for a quick pick-me-up, take a brisk walk around the block or do a quick at-home workout. You will not only improve your mood but you'll also get your heart pumping and increase your energy levels. Win-win!

7. Volunteer

Giving back has been shown to benefit both our mental and physical health. Studies have found altruism can help lower blood pressure, increase self-esteem and increase happiness. Volunteer at your local animal shelter, soup kitchen or another place of your choice. You never know how much of an impact you can make!

8. Turn up The Tunes

Listening to music has been shown to decrease stress levels and promote relaxation—two things that are essential for improving our moods. So crank up your favorite tunes next time you are feeling down and let the music wash over you. It'll help clear your mind and allow you to escape from whatever is causing you stress or anxiety.

9. Journal

Writing is therapeutic—it allows you to express your thoughts and feelings without judgment from others. It's also an excellent way to get out of your head and gain some perspective on whatever is causing stress or anxiety. So, grab a pen and paper (or open up a Word doc) and start pouring your heart out—you will be surprised at how much better you will feel afterwards!

10. Express Gratitude

When all else fails, it can be helpful to refocus your attention on what you are grateful for in life. Whether it's the roof over your head or a beautiful sunset, giving thanks is sure to put things into perspective. So why not try writing down five things you're grateful for each day? It may not seem like much, but it's guaranteed to help put a smile on your face.

There's no doubt about it: bad days happen to all of us—it's inevitable! But thankfully, there are things you can do to protect yourself from those slump-inducing funk moments. And remember: you are in control of your mood. So don't let anything or anyone else dictate how you are going to feel today—take control and choose happiness!
