Happiness and Joy: How Do We Cultivate It to Last?

Simple things like talking to a friend, cuddling with your partner, taking a nature walk or playing with your kids can activate the release of chemicals in the body called the "happy hormones," which can improve your mood when you're feeling down. True happiness, though, originates from the body, emotions and thoughts. Turning to oneself and establishing some basic pleasant habits are the first steps in cultivating happiness. Here are some ways to cultivate joy and happiness everyday.

1. Let Go Off Comparisons

Our sense of self-worth and satisfaction seem to have declined as a result of the advancement of modern technology. Social media encourages us to judge ourselves against others and look for approval from total strangers. But, constant connectivity makes it difficult to feel content with your existence. Feelings of worry, envy, unhappiness, and low self-esteem might result from the persistent impulse to compare your life to that of others.

To drop comparisons:

  • Recognise the circumstances that lead you to compare yourself to others and make an effort to avoid them.
  • Stop idly looking through your social media feeds.

Breaking the comparison habit can support letting go of melancholy, loneliness, isolation and envy.

2. Spread Love

Spread joy wherever you go and treat others with empathy and love. If you're radiating positive vibes, it's going to draw people in who want to feel the same way that you do. That's because happiness is contagious to those around you.

3. Don't Try To Be Perfect

Your chances of finding pleasure are destroyed when you feel the pressure to hold yourself and others to unreasonably high standards and expectations. You must cultivate a growth attitude if you want to be content with your life and happy. Set realistic expectations and acknowledge that everyone has flaws.

4. Forgive Oneself & Others

Good mental health and wellbeing are associated with forgiving oneself and others. Shame, anger and resentment sap energy and can lead to mental illnesses like anxiety, sadness and mood disorders. Practice self-compassion and recognise you deserve empathy just as much as anyone else if you want to build pleasure.

5. Accept & Work Through Your Emotions

Consider your feelings and acknowledge their significance. But, resist allowing your negative emotions from taking over. After acknowledging them, actively navigate your way through them to release yourself.

Our thoughts and experiences affect how we feel when we are happy. Significant life events and ordinary daily joys trigger it. Many times, the people we are with, the locations we go to and the things we do affect how happy we are. True happiness, though, begins inside of you. You must look inward and begin to follow some basic happy habits if you want to build happiness.
